Hi! I'm Dorothy Ryan. I have had a life time of
sewing. My mother had a sewing work room in our home from the day I was
born. She made draperies for John M. Smythe and other major design
firms. I started sewing clothes for myself from about the age of nine.
I have made everything from bathing suits to wedding dresses and all
things in between.
When my daughter started Irish dancing (she is
now 21 years old), I knew nothing about solo dresses. Her dancing
started with a large expense for the school dress. I decided that I
could exercise my sewing skills and create these dresses. I thought that
if I could make a wedding dress I certainly could make one of these
costumes. Boy was I wrong and my first attempts certainly proved it.
Fortunately patience and perseverance prevailed and I mastered the
dress.
As friends and other dancers found out that I
had perfected this skill , I was asked over and over "would you make one
for my daughter?". That was the start of "Ryan's Irish Dance Dresses".
This is a one person operation. I am somewhat of a perfectionist and
will not accept a bad fit or poor quality. Understanding this, I can
give you only so much growing room (about 2 inches in length) and still
have it fit correctly.
